📌 Velocity & Distance Guidelines:
Vertical Targets (perpendicular): 50 metres minimum
Maximum Velocity: 1,200 fps at impact
Minimum Velocity: 800 fps at impact (not applicable to air guns)
⚠ Subsonic rounds (under 1,100 fps) may not activate moving target plates. Rounds slower than 500 fps may fail to fragment and could result in ricochet or bounce-back — especially with soft lead pellets or copper-plated rounds.
📌 Paddle & Arm Compatibility:
This paddle fits all current SPI Texas Star arms — including arms made from 6mm Mild Steel, 6mm AR450, and 8mm AR500. It is purpose-built for .22LR use, and when shooting .22LR, you should always run a paddle rated for it — like this 6mm Mild Steel version.
⚠ An 8mm AR500 plate doesn’t flinch at .22LR. It’s built for serious punch, not polite requests. Stick with 6mm for proper functionality.
While .22LR can make contact with 8mm plates, it will not reliably eject them from the Texas Star. As a result, 8mm AR500 paddles are not recommended for rimfire calibres — not due to durability, but simply because they don’t function correctly with lower-energy rounds.
You can safely run this paddle on stronger Texas Star arms (e.g. AR450 or AR500) when shooting .22LR. However, never run a thicker or higher-rated paddle on a lower-rated arm. For example, using an 8mm paddle on a 6mm Mild Steel arm may lead to excessive wear, deformation, or even dangerous shrapnel deflection in unpredictable directions.
All SPI Texas Star systems are rated based on the weakest component in the shooting zone. If you're using a 6mm mild steel paddle, the entire system is considered rimfire-only — even if mounted to armour-rated arms.
📌 High Volume Use Recommendation:
For high-volume use and demand, we recommend upgrading to our 6mm AR450 paddles. They offer increased wear resistance while maintaining full compatibility with all SPI Texas Star arms — making them ideal for regular .22LR training and high-use environments, with less frequent target replacement due to wear, as AR450 will last significantly longer than mild steel.
